Good morning. It is Tuesday, September 14, 2021.
I am sure you have heard the expression “Ignorance is bliss”. In other words, if you do not know about something, you do not worry about it. It is a very old expression. This phrase was coined by the English poet and literary scholar Thomas Gray (1716-1771).
The proverb first appeared in Thomas Gray's poem, 'Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College' in which he said that, "Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise." According to Cambridge Dictionary the proverb 'Ignorance is bliss' is, 'said to emphasize that sometimes it is better for you if you do not know all the facts about a situation' What it simply means is that in certain situations, lack of knowledge pertaining to that situation results in happiness and comfort. That is where I am right now. My youngest son asked me not too long ago if I heard such and such on the news. I confessed to him that I no longer listen to the news. I do not even listen to weather reports anymore. I like the surprise of it all.
As Wendell entered the last few months of his life, as the nation, workplaces and families became divided over politics and the vaccine, I realized I no longer knew who I could trust. People I admired and respected were suddenly engaging in crazy talk. News outlets were contradicting one another, and not just occasionally and not just on unimportant issues, but daily and on matters of health and the pursuit of happiness. What I heard on Fox was in direct conflict with what I heard on MSNBC. I simply threw up my hands and said “I quit” I must admit, my inner conflict subsided greatly.
The government has become far reaching and intrusive (or maybe it has always been that way.)
Did you know in some places you cannot hold a garage sale or open a lemonade stand without a permit?
Not too long back a Bar and Grill in the city of Encinitas, a beach community in San Diego County, was fined $3,000 for allowing their patrons to dance while listening to live music.
In 2012 an Eagle Point man was sentenced to 30 days in jail and over $1,500 in fines because he had three reservoirs on his property to collect and use rainwater.
If you think that is silly, read this!

In Gainesville County, Georgia, it is against the law to eat fried chicken in any other way except with your bare hands. As much as the law might seem absurd, it is enforced. In 2009, a 91-year-old visitor from Louisiana was arrested and charged for eating fried chicken with a fork. The law has been in existence since 1965, and the art of eating fried chicken with your hands is considered “a culinary delicacy sacred to this municipality".
According to Wikipedia Congress has enacted approximately 200–600 statutes during each of its 115 biennial terms so that more than 30,000 statutes have been enacted since 1789.
According to govtrack.us since World War II (the earliest we have data), Congress has typically enacted 4-6 million words of new law in each two-year Congress. This link breaks down the bills and resolutions introduced in each two-yar Congress by their final status. It is MIND BOGGLING https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/statistics
Immigration laws. Gun laws. Asset forfeiture laws. Land use laws. Vaccine laws. Don’t Eat Chicken with A Fork laws. The list goes on and on and on.
Now don’t get me wrong. I believe it is important that a body of people have a set of guidelines, rules and laws to follow and live with. After all God gave us the 10 Commandments. These are a great set of laws showing love for our Creator and for our fellow man. But every year more and more of our freedoms are being taken from us.
When will it end?! How will it end?
It will end in a glorious culmination of Jesus' 2nd coming!
We are told in Acts 1:9-11 that Jesus will come back in the same way he left. “Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
Matthew 24:30 “And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.”
Revelation 1:7 “Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.” NKJV
Daniel 7:13 ““I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.”
1 Thessalonians 4:17 “Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.”
The signs are all around us my friend. As more and more of our freedoms erode, as people become more divided, more unloving, more unforgiving, we are told to look up. Why?? Because Jesus, our Redeemer, is coming!!
Luke 21:28 “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” NKJV
Don’t be naive. There are difficult times ahead. As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse, dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical, treacherous, ruthless, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God. They’ll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they’re animals. Stay clear of these people. These are the kind of people who smooth-talk themselves into the homes of unstable and needy women and take advantage of them; women who, depressed by their sinfulness, take up with every new religious fad that calls itself “truth.” They get exploited every time and never really learn. These men are like those old Egyptian frauds Jannes and Jambres, who challenged Moses. They were rejects from the faith, twisted in their thinking, defying truth itself. But nothing will come of these latest impostors. Everyone will see through them, just as people saw through that Egyptian hoax. You’ve been a good apprentice to me, a part of my teaching, my manner of life, direction, faith, steadiness, love, patience, troubles, sufferings—suffering along with me in all the grief I had to put up with in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. And you also well know that God rescued me! Anyone who wants to live all out for Christ is in for a lot of trouble; there’s no getting around it. Unscrupulous con men will continue to exploit the faith. They’re as deceived as the people they lead astray. As long as they are out there, things can only get worse. But don’t let it faze you. Stick with what you learned and believed, sure of the integrity of your teachers—why, you took in the sacred Scriptures with your mother’s milk! There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us. 2 Timothy 3 - The Message Version
With all of that said, we need not be troubled about what is going on around us. Yes, ignorance can be bliss, but we should not be ignorant regarding God’s love toward us. Jesus came to, not only save us, but He came to show us how much God loves us. Jesus told Philip “whoever has seen me has seen the Father”. Jesus showed by His example repeatedly, the love that They have for us.
So, in the lyrics of Vitamin C’s Smile “keep a smile on your face and make the world a better place”. Trust in God! Love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind. He loves you as much!
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” John 14:1-3 ESV
