The Spirit of Wordless Groans

Good morning, it is Thursday, July 15, 2021

Not too long ago I was searching online for a particular subject that I was writing on and came across a man denouncing the Holy Spirit. It took me by surprise. I was under the naïve impression that all Christians believed in the Holy Spirt. Why would they not after all?! The Bible is full of references! But he did not, and he was not ashamed of talking down to people that believed in the Holy Spirit.

Dangerous grounds! “And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” Matthew 12:32 ESV

The Holy Spirit is a part of the God Head, the Holy Trinity. 1 John 5:7..."For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."

By contrast, I came across a video that showed a preacher bleating like a sheep and when he touched people they would jump up and down, run across the stage flailing their arms, jumping on furniture, jerking, and falling, and the entire congregation was laughing and yelling. They said it was the work of the Holy Spirt. It seemed so wrong to me. No offense.

Let’s look at what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit.

You might ask,

when did the Holy Spirt first appear?

Some may say at Pentecost, after the resurrection of Jesus.

“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4

In fact, He showed up much sooner than that.

Then perhaps at the baptism of Jesus?

“and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Luke 3:22 ESV

He showed up sooner than that.

Jesus conception and birth then?

“And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.” Luke 1:35 ESV

In fact, He showed up much, much sooner than that!

He was present at the creation of our world.

“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2 ESV

As a child, the adults would refer to Him as the Holy Ghost. After all that is the way the King James Version is written. It never frightened me. I knew He was good.

But what is the role of the Holy Spirit? Is it to cause people to jump on furniture and bleat like goats? Not hardly! John 16:8 tells us the work of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of our sin. “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:”

The Holy Spirit is our teacher. John 14:26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

The Holy Spirit reveals things to us. 1 Corinthians 2:10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.”

The Holy Spirit gives us the power to witness to others. Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

He gives gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 “…To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.”

When we give our lives to Christ, the Holy Spirit marks us. Ephesians 1:13 says He is our deposit guaranteeing our inheritance. “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,”

When we do not know what to pray or how to pray, He intercedes on our behalf. Romans 8:26-27 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God.”

Acts 4:31

Romans 8:14-16

Titus 3:4-6

2 Thessalonians 2:13

There are many others.

You cannot believe in God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ and leave the Holy Spirit out of it.

Matthew 28:19 is very explicit on there being three... “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”
