Take a Sniff

I just read that sniffing rosemary can help with memory. Good to know!

Did you know that simply smelling certain scents can improve, not only memory, but focus and mental clarity? Studies have shown that certain aromas can enhance cognitive function, making them useful for studying, working, or just staying mentally sharp.

I also learned today that Rosemary is often called the “memory herb” because it contains a compound that has been linked to improved recall and alertness. A study from Northumbria University found that people who inhaled rosemary performed better on memory tests! Come on Rosemary!

Peppermint is another great option. Peppermint can increase alertness and concentration, and some studies suggest it enhances problem-solving skills and reaction times.

Cinnamon is not just a delicious spice, it has been shown to stimulate cognitive function and improve attention span. It also helps with working memory, making it a great scent to incorporate into your routine.

Sage has long been used for brain health, supporting memory retention and overall mental clarity. It's a great option if you are looking for a natural way to keep your mind sharp.

Lemon is known for reducing mental fatigue and increasing focus. It is particularly helpful for improving mood and alertness at the same time.

Lavender is mostly known for relaxation, but because it reduces stress, it can also help improve focus and memory retention. A calm mind is often a more effective one!

There are several ways to enjoy these aromas but one of the most direct methods is sniffing essential oils straight from the bottle. If you have heard me speak on the Power of Scent you know that I love to place a few drops on a cotton ball. I like to rub a drop between my hands and then cup my hands over my nose, and take a deep breath. This is great when you need an instant cognitive boost.

A diffuser is another excellent option. I have a diffuser and I use it often, but did you know we are called to be living diffusers?

The text was written by Paul and in this specific passage, he reflects on the role of believers in spreading the knowledge of God’s grace.

"Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing." 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 NKJV

He uses the metaphor of a "fragrance" to illustrate how Christians, through their faith and witness, spread the "aroma" of Christ's knowledge to others. This fragrance is pleasing to God, and those who receive it are drawn closer to Him, while those who reject it remain indifferent or hostile.

For the same reason Paul wrote this centuries ago, we are to encourage others. We are to remind others that despite challenges and opposition, they are part of God’s victorious work through Christ.

Paul wanted them to understand that their lives, through their testimony and actions, were meant to "diffuse" the knowledge of Christ's victory and love wherever they went; nothing has changed in that regard! We are meant to do the same today!

We are called to be living, breathing diffusers. We are to diffuse the fragrance of Christ, sharing His love and truth with others.
