Good morning! It is Thursday, April 8, 2021.
I love to sing. My earliest memories are of my mom singing. She would sing in the car. She would sing in the house. She loved to sing; still does.
She entered my younger sister and me in talent contests as early as age 4. We sang Mary Had a Little Lamb. Mom made our costumes, and they were perfect. I was Mary, complete with Shepherd’s crook, and my little sister was the lamb. Her costume was covered in cotton balls. We were adorable!!
We won first place that evening. I like to think it was my spot-on lyrics, but truth be told, I am sure it was because of my sister, age 2, dressed in her little lamb contest, staring at the audience. She was supposed to sing as well, but was so overwhelmed by the sea of faces, that she just stared, wide eyed.
Singing. What a wonderful gift from God!
From healthline.com "music can actually enhance brain functions...music can evoke emotion, help regain memories, stimulate new neural connections, and active attention. While listening to music may bring greater health benefits, creating it can be an effective therapy, too."
That was no accident. God created our brains to give and receive music and song.
I love the Psalms. They are so rich with hope and promise and, they are songs! They are songs that encourage singing.
Psalm 100:1-2 "A Psalm for giving thanks. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!"
Psalm 95:1-2 "Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!"
Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.”
Psalm 105:2 “Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.”
Psalm 104:33 “I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.”
Psalm 132:9 “...may your faithful people sing for joy.”
And so many others!!
Isaiah 42:10 “Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth...”
Ephesians 5:19 “...Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.”
Colossians 3:16 “...singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”
From a CNN report "Music is present in every part of our lives. Our spiritual rituals are framed with songs, children learn the alphabet through song...Research suggests music can influence us a lot. It can impact illness, depression, spending, productivity and our perception of the world."
Music is certainly a gift from God, when used correctly. "Some research has suggested it can increase aggressive thoughts or encourage crime."
Music, when used the way God intended, can lift our moods, help us get the chores done, draw us into worship, even unlock the brain that has been frozen due to Dementia and other memory-loss conditions.
My favorite verse regarding singing is this one:
Zephaniah 3:17 "The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing."
That gives me chills just thinking about it. To contemplate the fact that God will rejoice over me and sing over me....just wow! It is so humbling. And I can hardly wait. I know it will be the most excellent song I have ever heard.
I pray your day is blessed. Remember to be a blessing to someone today and today and every day "“Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously..." Isaiah 12:5
Keep looking up! Jesus is coming soon!
