Records, 8-tracks and Time

Updated: May 25, 2021

Good morning. It is another beautiful day. It is Monday, May 3, 2021.

I am raising a granddaughter. I have had her since she was 7 years old. She is now 18 and getting ready to graduate high school. She has a job at a fast food restaurant and plans to move out of my house in August. I will miss her. When Wendell and I decided to make the commitment to take 3 of our grandchildren into our home in 2009, I made the remark that we would be a blessing to them. In fact they were, and are, such a blessing to me!! It was not always easy, but it was worth it!

I had a fun conversation with Hannah over the weekend. She shared with me that a couple of her friends have record players. She explained how one friend had paid close to $300 for this record player and how they had looked through the friends albums, how they had listened to the records. She remarked how different the sound was. She liked it. She now wants a record player.

That took me back to my childhood. My mom had a huge stereo cabinet with a record player. I can still hear Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, Henry Mancini, Tennessee Ernie Ford and Elvis Presley. And nothing makes me think of Christmas more than Burl Ives on moms stereo. Brings a tear just thinking of those times.

I made the remark to Hannah "everything old is new again."

Have you noticed that too? Hairstyles (I wonder if the Beehive will ever be vogue again?) clothing (mom jeans of all things) furniture, record just takes a few years and those old things are back in style with a younger generation.

The Bible talks about Jesus making all things new again. I love this visual!

Revelation 21:5 NIV 21 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

When I was 13 years old I spent the summer babysitting two little boys Monday through Friday. I saved all my money and bought a brand new 8-track player with speakers I had just enough money left to purchase two 8-track tapes. Dr. Hook and Kenny Rogers and the First Addition. I kicked my record player and records to the curb and embraced this new technology. Then came cassette tapes and I threw the 8-track tapes in the garbage. Then came CD's!! Wow was that cool! No more using a pencil to rewind tape that had escaped it's small plastic case. And of course now we rarely touch a CD. Music is now digital and you can find anything you want to listen to at the tip of your figures. No bulky equipment necessary. In fact just last month I gave away boxes of my old CD's.

Technology. It seems to move so quickly now. That is one of the reasons I believe we are living in end times. The Bible tells us in Daniel 12:4 ESV "But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

Speaking of running to and fro, according to my search this morning:

The fist train was invented in 1804, the first car in 1888 and the fist airplane 1903. Look how far we have come in that time!

And knowledge:

The first light bulb in 1809

The first camera in 1816

The first telephone 1876

The first television 1927

The first electric programmable computer 1943

The first video game (tic tac toe) 1950

The first satellite launched was 1957

The first trip to the moon was 1959

The first cellphone was 1973

The first trip to Mars was 1975

The first home computer was 1977

The first flip phone was 1996

The fist Fitbit was 2009

The fist Apple watch was 2014

Of course the list goes on and on, but just look at how knowledge has been increased in the past 200 years, the past 100 years, even the past 10 years! In it amazing!!!

"Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

I hope your day is amazing. Be blessed. Be a blessing and remember, Jesus is coming soon!
