The road I travel to work every day has fresh striping. Two solid bright yellow lines down the center and a crisp white fog line on each side. It looks nice, more importantly it could save lives. This particular road can be very foggy certain times of the year and is a bit curvy. The stripes make it much easier to navigate.
Roads are amazing pieces of human engineering. If you stop and think about it, paved roads in the United States have only existed for a little over 100 years. In the bigger picture of life, that is a tiny drop in the bucket of time.
Court Avenue is a small street in downtown Bellefontaine, Ohio. It is located adjacent to the Logan County Courthouse and is known for being the first street in the United States to be paved with concrete. The year was 1893.
Think about that. Not even 130 years later, our nation boasts millions of miles of paved roads.
I think it was 4th grade, maybe 5th grade, but I remember my science book theorizing that by the year 2000 we would have flying cars. I can still see the illustration on the page of that school book. I also remember thinking, “ how will we keep from bumping into each other without painted lines to guide us?” “What will prevent us from just taking off in any ol’ direction?”
A couple of things I learned from that:
1) Science isn’t always right in its predictions.
2) the year 2000 came much faster than anticipated.
Flying cars are still not common, but today’s technology and the advancement in engineering and knowledge has really been incredibly fast.
An elderly friend, since passed away, once shared with me his experience of riding his horse on I-5 along Grants Pass, before it was paved! He went on to talk about watching the freeway go in from start to finish. I-5 was originally created in 1956. By the way, did you know I-5 is the only continuous Interstate highway to touch both the Mexican and the Canadian borders? Little trivia for you.
Back to the striping. With all the work that goes into excavating, preparing and finishing a roadway, it would all fail miserably if it did not have the painted stripes.
Those stripes and colors tell us many things as we whiz down the road. They are our guides and without them there would be chaos on our roads.
The same is true in our lives. If we try to go through life with no knowledge of the signs around us or what they mean, we are doomed for chaos in our lives. We will be out there in the world, blindly bumping into things and leaving the boundaries of safety.
The signs are there my friend. Jesus is coming again. He is coming soon. Do you know the signs? Do you know what to watch for? Are you ready?
…understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth…these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.
You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me…which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3 ESV
