More human beings died by this cause than any other in 2022. Any guesses?
I want to pause for just a moment and caution you that today’s writing is viewed as very controversial and could be an emotional trigger. I typically try to stay away from topics that could cause controversary, however, I believe in my heart this needs to be said/written today.
So, the question was, what caused more human deaths than anything else in 2022? The answer is abortion.
The National March for Life is coming up January 20, 2023, in Washington D.C., and I think today is a good day to remind ourselves, a heartbreaking reminder, that abortion is alive and well.
According to statistics compiled by Worldometers, there were over 44 million abortions world-wide in 2022. The independent site collects data from governments and other organizations and then reports the data, along with estimates and projections, based on those numbers.
Worldometers bases its daily abortion figures on a fact sheet from the World Health Organization, whose estimates are even higher. WHO states that, “Around 73 million induced abortions take place worldwide each year,”
Abortion is also the leading cause of death in the United States.
“In the USA, where nearly 30% of pregnancies are unintended and 40% of these are terminated by abortion, there are between 1,500 to 2,500 abortions per day. (PER DAY!)
When contrasting the abortion numbers to other causes of death, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, traffic accidents and suicide, abortions far outnumbered every other cause. By contrast, an estimated 9.6 million people died from cancer in 2022, 6 million from smoking, 16 million from disease, and 2 million died of HIV/AIDS. Deaths by malaria and alcohol are also recorded.
Unborn babies are not recognized as human beings even though biology indicates that they are unique, living human beings from the moment of conception and they die brutal, violent deaths in abortions.
The abortion number is incomprehensible, but each of those 73 million abortions worldwide in 2022 represents a living human being whose life was violently destroyed in their mother’s womb. Each unborn baby already had their own unique DNA, making them distinct from their mother. That DNA indicated if the child was a boy or girl, their eye and hair color, their height, possible genetic disorders and other disabilities, and much more. In most cases, the unborn babies’ hearts are beating when they are aborted, too.
In America, just under 1 million babies are aborted every year. Though abortion rates have been dropping in the past decade, abortion remains the leading cause of death in the United States as well. (Source: lifenews.com)
Oh dear Lord forgive us! These statistics cause my stomach to hurt and churn. And you know what? We should have a physical reaction to those kinds of numbers. One baby would be too many.
We are precious in God’s sight. Like a precious jewel. Malachi 3:17 says, “They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.” NKJV
My footnote for ‘jewels’ also says ‘treasure’. We are God’s treasure. We are His precious jewels.
I want you to think about something for a moment. Perhaps you have even lived this scenario. Your eye catches the eye of another; you date; you fall in love; the big questions come: “Will you marry me?” as a beautiful gold and diamond engagement ring is slid on a finger.
Awe…true love. New love. There’s nothing quite like it but wait. You look for a moment and say, “I have a better plan.” You leave the room and return with a hammer and a block of wood. You place your beautiful, new engagement ring on the wood and you smash it to pieces.
Most would not do that to an expensive diamond ring and yet humans will do this to God’s most precious creation.
How much is a diamond worth?
According to the huffpost dot com, a 59.6-carat flawless pink diamond was auctioned by Sotheby’s for a staggering $83.2 million in 2013. Sotheby’s says it is the most expensive jewel or diamond ever sold at auction, and was cut from a 132-carat rough diamond found in Africa in 1999.
It’s hard for me to wrap my head around that kind of money, and yet, we are more precious to God than an 83-million-dollar diamond!
We are more precious than gold, and according to apmex.com the price of gold today is $1,882.30 per ounce.
If we had a 150-pound person that would equal 2,400 ounces. At $1,882 per ounce that person’s earthly value would be $4,516,800.00 and yet are more valuable than that to Jesus.
I have often heard, and probably said, “God knew you in the womb.” But that is not what the verse says. Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…” ESV
Even before the moment of conception, God knew us.
Psalm 139:16 tells us that His eyes saw us before we were born. “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” ESV
If you go to the March for Life website, the first thing you read are these words: “Together, we stand for the unborn. Abortion is the most significant human rights abuse of our time. Will you take a stand?” (Source: marchforlife.org)
The question is, as Christians, what do we do? How can we help? I don’t have all the answers, but I know we can be that encouragement to someone considering abortion. It can feel like the end of the world, but really, so often, it is the beginning of something very beautiful. We can point them to a professional that can help.
I interviewed a woman who lived years and years with the guilt of having an abortion. She found The Pregnancy Care Center in Grants Pass and it changed her life.
If you are struggling with the guilt or sorrow of having an abortion, please know this. Know first that God loves you! There is nothing you can do that will change that.
Secondly, know that Jesus wants to heal you and restore you. God will forgive you. He is right there waiting. All you need to do is reach out for His hand.
If you are pregnant and don’t know what to do; if you are considering abortion, please first contact the Pregnancy Care Center. They will give you all the love and good advice you need in this moment of indecision.
They will perform an ultrasound, at no charge to you whatsoever, allowing you listen to your unborn baby’s heartbeat. You can make a choice for life.
And speaking of the heart…the heart first appears about 20 days after fertilization, and, less than three weeks from fertilization, it begins to beat! A human heart, beating in the mother’s womb, as early as 18 days from conception. THAT is life.
You can choose adoption and enrich the lives of someone who cannot have a child. You can choose to raise your baby. You can choose life. Please choose life.
Nelson Mandela once said, May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”
Don’t let the fear of an unknown future, dictate a rash decision you make today. That future could be filled with joy and happiness.
Sleep on. Pray about it. Talk to a Christian friend about it. I would also encourage you to call the PCC.
The Pregnancy Care Center is an accredited medical center, and I know some of the men and women who work there; they are incredibly compassionate. They will not pressure you to make any specific decision. There are programs and support groups for men and women.
You can email them at firstname.lastname@example.org or call them at 541-479-6264. Their office is open 9am 5pm, Monday through Thursday.
Making a big change in life, or allowing one to happen, can be scary, but regret is even scarier. Pray about those changes that are coming and let God lead you through. He is faithful in every regard.
