Happy New Year! Make it Count!

In just a couple of days we will say goodbye to 2022. And with the new year, often, comes New Year's Resolutions. I am terrible at keeping them. You?

However, about 5 or 6 years ago I made a resolution that I kept all year. I tried it again the next year and the next and I was able to keep it. It was doable! So, once again, this year I will make the same resolution..."to never make a New Year's Resolution again." 🙂

The fact is, every day is, or should be, a day for self-improvement and growth.

Many people will consult astrology as they head into a new year. In fact, you could pay an astrologer up to $150 an hour for a consultation, or you could go as cheap as opening your daily or weekly newspaper and reading your horoscope. It really is amazing how many people hang on every word of their sign.

According to a 2018 Pew Research poll, about 29% of American adults now believe in astrology. (Some say it could be much higher) Likewise, the poll found that women are more likely to believe in astrology (37%) than men are (20%).

Where are we putting our faith and trust? In ourselves? We fail all the time. We can't even keep a resolution to lose 20 pounds.

Are we putting our faith and trust in astrology, signs, and horoscopes instead of Jesus Christ our Creator God??

A study published on November 20 in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, found that narcissism is the strongest predictor of people who believe in astrology, and that the IQ levels of believers tend to be lower. The study was conducted by a team of researchers at Lund University in Sweden, and they point out that astrology is becoming more and more popular. But why? Why do people believe in astrology and zodiac signs?

Scientists are not sure why astrology is undergoing what these researchers call a “revival”, but they do point out that past research has found people are more likely to embrace astrology and other scientifically questionable beliefs when they are under stress.

I want to say to those people, that avenue will always be a dead end. This road will not equip you to handle stress better. It will not help you. In fact, it will lie to you. Astrologers and astrology and signs will always let you down, but there is One, who never will! His name is Jesus.

Isaiah said it best when he posed the question:

"And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?" Isaiah 8:19 ESV

Indeed! Jesus knows the way. He is the Way.

As we begin a new year; as we consider changes that need to be made in our life, go to Jesus first. Inquire of your God and no one else. Ask Him for the strength that you need to accomplish only the things He wants in your life.

New Year's Resolutions are great, but remember also that every day is an opportunity to grow our relationship with Jesus. He is coming soon, now is the time to prepare for Him.

My friend Alta sends me something inspirational every morning, accompanied by a photo that she has taken, generally speaking. Anyway, more times than not the timing is perfect.

This came a few days ago, and I think it is the perfect message to take and keep in our hearts as God brings us to a new year.

"We have but one life to live, and through our daily connection with God we have, in and through the merits of the Lord Jesus Christ, a constant sustenance in doing the things that will represent Christ to the world.

We may not have all the conveniences that some have in ease and comfort and in earthly goods, but we have the blessed assurance which Christ gave to His believing disciples...To them He said, 'Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also' (John 14:1-3) ....

Blessed words! We may receive Him into our hearts, and He will be unto us hope and courage and sustaining grace.

The Lord would have us trust fully and entirely in Him. Then we will, in the simplicity of our faith, believe that Christ will do for us all that He has promised.

Let all come to the Saviour in the full assurance that He will do all that He has promised." The Upward Look, 320
