Fake Reality

Good morning, it is Wednesday, June 30, 2021

I love a good oxymoron.

Deafening silence, pretty ugly, awful good, dull roar, civil war, icy hot, jumbo shrimp, lead balloon. Bitter Sweet.

There are many others, but those are some of my favorites.

I read a headline this morning that caught my attention: “30 Reality Shows That Are Totally Fake”. hhmmmm. Fake reality.

Not too long ago my mom was telling me about a news article she had read regarding the reality show “House Hunters.” If you have never seen it, homebuyers look at three houses, hoping to find their dream home. However, most of the time, they have already decided on their home before filming even begins. In fact, in some cases they have even purchased the home beforehand.

I will not bore you with all the titles on the list, but bottom line, some shows are not looking for talent as much as they are looking for a “sob story to spin into ratings gold”.

Shows where people bid on storage units will find the producers planting unique or valuable items in the sheds before the auction begins.

Shows with people living off-grid in the wilds of Alaska actually live down the road from a pizza place and hotels where they can stay when not filming.

The list goes on and on.

“Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.” Psalm 119:37 ESV

Why fake reality? Because it sucks people in. It is mind-numbing. It takes our minds of our problems. It sells. But more importantly, in a world where Satan is constantly trying to get our attention, it takes our mind off Jesus.

Turn on your tv any time, day or night, and you can easily find sex, violence, cursing, cheating, murder…all at the touch of a button.

John Ruysbroeck once wrote “We behold that which we are, and we are that which we behold.”

1 John 2:15-17 ESV “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life —is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

If earth is truly the battle ground of good vs. evil, and we are the pawns, you better believe Satan is going to use everything available to him to catch us in his snare. His only goal is to hurt God, to turn people away from God and ultimately he wants you unsaved and lost for eternity.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 ESV

I will see pictures of a big city at night and think “That is so beautiful.” But the city is filled with crime.

The colorful neon lights of Las Vegas…all of it is designed to suck people in. A place where you dream of ‘hitting it big’ but more than likely will go home broke. It is an illusion. It is a fake reality. Lights, signs, buzzers, music, vibrations, suspense, all designed to pull you in and hold you.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV

I love that old song Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Look full in His wonderful face

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace

My prayer for all of us is that we can keep our eyes on Jesus.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8 ESV
