Don't Play Games with the Devil

My parents were big on teaching. I have mentioned it before, but I was reading by the time I started Kindergarten. By 5 or 6 years old, I knew the name and call of many local birds and the names of native wildflowers. I had a clear understanding on the Holy trinity, guardian angels and what Jesus did for me when He anguished before, and on, the cross. Mom told me that at the age of 5 I asked if I could take a pamphlet on the state of the dead to my kindergarten teacher after one of her relatives passed away. My childhood was rich with knowledge-giving.

One of the many things I was warned against was spiritualism.

If we could hop in our way-back machine and turn it to March 1848, we could grab a paper from the local newsstand, and read headlines regarding the The Fox Sisters. The two younger sisters used “rappings” to convince their older sister, and others, that they were communicating with spirits. I want to look at what one woman wrote almost 2 ½ years later.

“August 24, 1850, I saw that the "mysterious rapping" was the power of Satan; some of it was directly from him, and some indirectly, through his agents, but it all proceeded from Satan. It was his work that he accomplished in different ways; yet many in the churches and the world were so enveloped in gross darkness that they thought and held forth that it was the power of God…“I saw that soon it would be considered blasphemy to speak against the rapping, and that it would spread more and more, that Satan's power would increase and some of his devoted followers would have power to work miracles…” (Source:

I guess we could say the birth of modern spiritualism happened with those rappings in Hydesville, but truth be told, spiritualism has been around for a lot longer than the 1800’s and the Bible has plenty to say about it.

Isaiah 8:19 “And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?” ESV

“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 19:31 ESV

Necromancer: a wizard or magician, witch, warlock, diviner, occultist, voodooist, enchanter, shaman, witch doctor.

When was the last time you walked down a game aisle at your local department store? There you will find Candy Land and Clue; Monopoly and Sorry; Jenga, Scrabble and Uno; Yahtzee, Trouble and Ouija. So many brightly colored toys and board games to choose from.

Wait. Did you say Ouija? Right there with the fun and innocent board games? The Ouija is also known as a spirit board or talking board and it is dangerous! To use a Ouija board, someone must first ask the spirits a question. It has no business there, friends. Why are we playing with spirits??

Let’s look at the origin of the name and the game.

In February, 1891, the first few advertisements started appearing in papers: “Ouija, the Wonderful Talking Board,” boomed a Pittsburgh toy and novelty shop, describing a magical device that answered questions “about the past, present and future with marvelous accuracy” and promised “never-failing amusement and recreation for all the classes,” a link “between the known and unknown, the material and immaterial.” Another advertisement in a New York newspaper declared it “interesting and mysterious” and testified, “as Proven at Patent Office before it was allowed. Price, $1.50.” This mysterious talking board was basically what is sold in board game aisles today. (Source:

“Now the Spirit expressly (or explicitly) says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,” 1 Timothy 4:1 NKJV

We are told not to believe everything we hear and see, but to test it. But test it how? What is our measuring rod?

Here’s how you test for the genuine Spirit of God. Everyone who confesses openly his faith in Jesus Christ—the Son of God, who came as an actual flesh-and-blood person—comes from God and belongs to God. 1 John 4:2-3 The Message

“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20

Our Heavenly Father feels very strongly about His children seeking the advice of mediums.

“If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.” Leviticus 20:6 ESV

“And he burned his son as an offering and used fortune-telling and omens and dealt with mediums and with necromancers. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.” 2 Kings 21:6 ESV

We are told that people who communicate with spirits will not be granted eternal life.

“But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8 NKJV

“Outside are the…sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.” Revelation 22:15 ESV

“Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. He did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.” 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 ESV

This is a very in-depth study and I am barely scratching the surface, but the questions remain, why does God not want us talking with mediums? And who are these deceiving spirits and demons?

Much of the world believes they are the spirits of our dearly departed loved ones; God knows there are angels cast out of heaven, attempting to wreak as much havoc as possible under the leadership of Satan. The only goal is to confuse and consume.

These beings we call "evil angels" were once part of God's original and perfect creation. They were originally created as sinless, holy beings, but these angels decided to rebel against God. They too had what Pastor Kip calls our “Superpower”: Choice.

All the angels were given the power of choice, and many of the angels chose to believe Lucifer, aka Satan, aka the devil, when he launched a smear campaign against Jesus. Apparently, he was quite the convincing politician. The Bible says that 1/3 of the angels sided with him.

The Bible says, “And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— Jude 1:6 ESV

While those angels are kept in chains here on earth, they are making the most of their time attempting to keep people from seeing the real Jesus; the true God; the Truth of the Bible.

We need to exercise extreme caution and heed the Bible’s warnings on this topic. Our Father knows what’s best and He knows that Satan is a deceiver. In Jesus’ own words He called him a liar.

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” John 8:44 NIV.

Satan is a master magician.

Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 11:14 NIV. “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”

“For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” Matthew 24:24 NIV

We need to be extremely cautious and skeptical about anyone who claims to communicate with the dead. It might seem tempting, maybe a bit of a curiosity but you will playing right into the Devil’s hands.

Don’t play games with Devil!. He is bigger, stronger, older, and much wiser than you.

No, there is nothing new about mediums and there is nothing new about God’s warning to avoid them. Take the best advice given and don’t go there.

“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:19-21 ESV
