Good morning. It is Thursday, June 3, 2021.
I was at the coast one weekend. It was morning and I was headed down to the beach from our motel room. Far ahead, at the water's edge, was a woman. She was alone and acting very strange.
She would lift her arms in a large swoop and dance to the left looking toward the horizon, then dance to the right looking even higher. She would lower her arms and twirl in a circle and then lift her arms skyward and run into the water, just about ankle-deep, before retreating.
I thought "Is she is on drugs? Maybe she has been drinking already this morning."
As I got closer, I could hear, what I thought, was shouting...now I knew she was not "all there."
But as I got even closer I could hear more clearly. She was not shouting; she was singing and I heard "...then sings my soul! My savior God to thee. How great Thou art, how great thou art!"
She was singing How Great Thou Art, one of my all time favorite songs, and she was praising God, all alone, at the water's edge. She could not contain herself or her love for God. She was looking out at the majestic ocean, and the sky, and was simply praising her Creator.
She did not care who saw her or how she looked, she was in love with God, and she was showing it the best way she could.
My thoughts and feelings shifted, I now envied this brave soul that would publicly show her love and gratitude for our God. It was beautiful!!
"Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied...and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.." - Psalm 63:4-5 NKJV
This woman was certainly doing that. Her hands were lifted and she was praising with joyful lips. I can almost imagine her dancing on the beach with a tambourine, and you know, that would have been good praise too!
"Let them praise His name with the dance; Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel (tambourine) and harp." - Psalm 149:3 NKJV
There is an old saying "The eye is the window to the soul" but the Bible says, "your eye is the lamp of your body." It is in Luke 11 33-36.
I love The Message version:
“No one lights a lamp, then hides it in a drawer. It’s put on a lamp stand so those entering the room have light to see where they’re going. Your eye is a lamp, lighting up your whole body. If you live wide-eyed in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a musty cellar. Keep your eyes open, your lamp burning, so you don’t get musty and murky. Keep your life as well-lighted as your best-lighted room.”
That woman on the beach, she was living wide-eyed in wonder and belief and her body was full of light. And it shown like a beacon!
Beacon + beach = lighthouse, and according to Wikipedia: "a lighthouse is a tower...designed to emit light...to serve as a navigational aid...(to) mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, rocks, and safe entries to harbors..."
The two main purposes of a lighthouse are to serve as a navigational aid and to warn boats of dangerous areas. - nps.gov
Lord help me be more like that woman on the beach! Lord help me be a beacon to the world! Help me to be a lighthouse!
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16 NKJV
