A Trooper in Disguise

Updated: Oct 12, 2021

Good morning. It is Monday, October 11, 2021. Jeanette Stark here 😊

Have you ever met an angel?

I am not referring to a kind-hearted person you may know, I am talking about a real angel, sent from heaven.

The Bible tells us to be kind to strangers because they may just be an angel in disguise.

Hebrews 13:2 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” ESV

I have not seen an angel to my knowledge, but again, who knows?

The story I am going to share with you today came firsthand from my friend who experienced it.

She was very depressed. She was in constant, chronic pain. Nothing the doctors did for her offered the much-needed relief she was seeking. She had multiple surgeries, but nothing seemed to fix her issues.

She began to contemplate suicide. The more she thought about it, the more appealing it began to appear until one day she decided: today was the day.

She drove out to a viewpoint high above a river gorge. There were no guardrails to stop her from driving off the cliff and to her certain death and that is exactly what she planned on doing.

She sat for a couple of minutes thinking about it with her car in park. As she reached for the gear shift, there was a tap on her window.

It startled her because she was certain she was alone. She looked over and into the face of a tall, state trooper. She said he was in full uniform, including the trooper’s hat. She rolled her window down as he asked, “are you okay mam?”

She lied and said she was fine; she was just enjoying the scenery. He told her to have a nice day and walked back towards his car.

She said not 5 seconds had passed when she looked through her side mirror to see which direction he would take. He was gone! She looked up and down the road, no trooper vehicle. No dust, no sign, just gone.

Now, I have been to, and by, this place many times over the years. You can see for quite some distance in both directions. It would have been impossible for a car to travel out of sight, having left a dusty gravel parking area, in 5 seconds; including the time it would have taken for him to walk back to his car.

She sat there shaking her head and realized he must have been an angel. There really is no other explanation.

As she thought about what had just happened, she realized she could not take her life. As filled with pain as it was for her, it was precious. And if God cared so much for her that he sent an angel to encourage her, she could not follow through with her plan.

“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.” Psalm 34:7 ESV

If one angel can shut the mouths of hungry lions, how much more can he do for you in your time of need?

“My God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me…” Daniel 6:22 ESV

If an angel can show up with food, water and encouragement, could he not do the same for you? Do you remember the story of Elijah? He was running for his life. Jezebel wanted him dead.

“And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.” 1 Kings 19:5-8 ESV

The food the angel provided gave him strength and sustained him for 40 days!

If only we could see, not with worldly eyes, but with eyes that can penetrate the darkness of this world, we would see mighty angels sent to watch over us and protect us.

In 2 Kings 6:17 we read about Elisha’s prayer that his servant would see the armies of angels surrounding the city. “…So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”

What ever is going on your life, you can rest in the knowledge that God’s angels are watching over you, guarding you and protecting you.

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11 ESV
