A Reason To Celebrate!

Good morning. It is Monday, October 4, 2021

I was thinking about celebrations this morning. Those once-a-year events where we focus on something else; something special.

Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. New Year’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day. Birthdays, Anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Veterans Day. There’s Ground Hogs Day and April Fool’s Day and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. There is Boss’s Day and Secretary Day and Columbus Day.

If you live in France there is Bastille Day, Cannes Film Festival and Lemon Festival, to name a few.

In Canada there is Boxing Day, St. George’s Day, Orangemen’s Day and many others. lists 45 unique celebrations around the world. Some are FUN and some are more serious. Here are my “top 5” favorite: 😊

La Tomatina, Bunol, Spain: Spurred from locals throwing produce at each other due to a parade mishap in 1945, La Tomatina has become an annual event. If you attend, be prepared to be covered in tomatoes!

Holi, India: This Hindu celebration, also known as the festival of colors, marks the beginning of spring. People spray colors on each other and celebrate with friends and family.

San Fermin Festival, Pamplona, Spain: You probably know this festival better as the running of the bulls. From July 7-14, you and 1 million of your closest friends can participate in this annual event. If you’re not up to running for your life, there are other events, like the Giants and Big-Heads Parade!

Pingxi Lantern Festival, Taiwan: The Lantern Festival in Pingxi is one of the largest in the world with thousands of lanterns illuminating the night sky.

Battle of the Oranges, Ivrea, Italy: This festival is the largest food fight in Italy. People are divided into nine teams and throw oranges at each other to remember the city’s defiance against a tyrant.

Harbin Ice Festival, Harbin, China: The largest festival of its kind in the world, the Harbin Ice Festival features massive ice sculptures that are illuminated at night.

Songkran Water Festival, Chiang Mai, Thailand: If you’ve ever dreamed of a full-fledged water gun fight, head to Chiang Mai in April. During the Songkran water festival participants celebrate the New Year by soaking each other with water.

I think the most important celebration we have is…Creation. It is written into the very decalogue, woven in time at creation. And we get to celebrate it once a week, not just once a year.

“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” Genesis 20:11 NKJV

I love to let my mind run with imagination to that week of “firsts” for planet earth.

I grew up thinking God the Father did the creating, so imagine my surprise when I learned it was His Son that spoke our world into existence!

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.” - John 1:1-3 KJV

But Genesis tells us God created the heaven and the earth.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” - Genesis 1:1 KJV

“I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.” - Isaiah 45:12 KJV

Yes, the Bible tells us God created the heaven and earth, however, Jesus IS God!

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” - Colossians 1:16 KJV

“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands.” - Hebrews 1:10 NKJV

Think about the mighty power that was involved in Jesus ‘speaking’ stars and planets into existence! We cannot begin to comprehend it. But we can trust that kind of Creator! A Creator that made our world, formed animals and man from the dust of the earth, and made a plan for our salvation, and, desires to live with us!

“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. - John 17:24 NKJV

I have the same desire. I want to live with Jesus!! Do you? Do you know Him? Have you asked Him to be your Lord? Have you asked for forgiveness of sin? Ask Him today! There is no reason to put it off! Tomorrow may be too late.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God….For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8-11 NKJV
